Cliffs white with Haute-Normandie are essentially consisted of chalk, but we also distinguish there numerous levels of flint underlining the stratification.
Sometimes drawing notches of erosion, marly levels testify of detrital contributions or cinéritiques.
The dolomite is a transformation of the original chalk by partial substitution of the calcium by the magnesium.
Under the influence of an absence of prolonged sedimentation, the chalky bottom can undergo a cementation and a premature lithification which we call hardened "bottom" or "hardground" (the English term is more collectively adopted).
