Campanien is the fifth of six floors of the upper Cretaceous. He extends of 83,5 ± 0,7 and 70,6 ± 0,6 My is a rough duration of 12,9 My. The stratotype is defined in the village of Champagne (Charente-Maritime).
The base of Campanien is defined by the extinction of Crinoïde Marsupites testudinarius. His summit is defined by the appearance of the ammonite Pachydiscus neubergicus
The average level of the oceans during Campanien seems to be most raised of the Mesozoic times and cénozoïques, of the order of 250 meters over the current level.
