Share the article! Birth of a young colony(summer camp) Camponotus ligniperdus from a single queen: the queen is taken 26...
The queen is taken on June 26th, 2010 at the end of after noon(south) during a swarming, she will be placed while being at it in a tube distantly of water – method E.O Wilson.
- Test tube serving as changing room for the foundation of the queen:
The important here is to leave her(it) quiet, not needing to be fed during the foundation, the tube will be placed in a stable place (potentially to the black) not to put under stress the queen in this crucial stage.
The layings(eggs) will be made from then on less than a week after the stake in tube, generally 3 or 5 days later, here the first egg will be laid June 29th, 2010 is 3 days later. A heating by lamp or by heating cable - or the other means can be added to optimize the laying(eggs) and the incubation of eggs, effectively a temperature from 24 to 30 ° C is advised(recommended) and this by respecting a thermo-period about 8 hours of heating a day to let then come down again in an ambient temperature.
In the week the queen will have laid about fifteen eggs, observation noticed on many colonies(summer camps) in foundation which I was able to start - at the end of these a few days the layings(eggs) will stop to start again after the appearance of the first nymphs. Then eggs will be partially wasted(destroyed) by the queen she(it) even but also by the future larvas.
July 27th, 2010 is approximately one month later the brood of the small foundation looks like this:
- Big larvas are present!
On July 28th the oldest both larvas will weave their silk cocoon to cross(spend) cape of the nymphose. We are here 30 days later what is early ahead of on the experience(experiment) which I led here in 2005 with two other gynes. Naturally these figures can vary but give nevertheless an idea onto the duration of the development!
The first two "small" workers of the colony(summer camp) appear August 17th, 2010, is 50 days after the laying(eggs) of the first egg. The first generation workers are here, as to many sorts(species), small and called "juniors" the young queen having no sufficient(self-important) resources, she(it) privileges the number to the quality! During the year of foundation of the queen to Camponotus ligniperdus He(It) will not be observed by workers of big sizes, those - çi will not generally exceed 6 or 7 mm. Workers' observation of big sizes would let think of an adoption of brood stemming from a colony(summer camp) more agée: " boost ".
The young rising ants are not very strong remaining rather static, amorphous(apathetic) a few hours to see a few days, before beginning to play really their role; from there an area of harvest can be added to the tube to serve " as outside " and allow so to begin to feed the young colony(summer camp). Food which will consist of some midges (drosophilas for example) - protéiné contribution - and of a mixture of water or honeyed milk - sweet contribution-, Beneficial and completely estimated. Not to load(not charge) in food, would be useless. It is enough to give(look) " to the demand(request) ".
Here the tube is placed in a lid of box with chocolates is is thus of use as area of harvest to the rising colony(summer camp). A small end of pipe of the kind(genre) "tropical fish enthusiast" is placed in the entrance(entry) of the tube and will be of use to the workers to go out of it. Of the simple talc affixed by means of a brush on vertcales walls of the box serves as anti-escape.
In 02 Seprembre the small colony(summer camp) consists of 7 first generation workers, more birth to come, it will cross(spend) the winter with this staff(size) (1 workers' only generation). The year of foundation of the queen the number of first generation workers varies from 1 to 10 more generally from 3 to 7 workers.
On September 23rd no more present egg, more than small larvas which will remain "blocked"("surrounded") at the stage(stadium) II for the great majority of them until spring, 2011. Larvas are grouped(included) as one little to see him(it) on the following photo.
== > Diapause of the colony(summer camp).
Later about 8 months of diapause going of some 3 to 9 ° for the coldest temperatures of this period in approximately 12 - 14 ° concerning the last weeks ( rather exceptional spring) the colony(summer camp) resumes(takes back) slowly a certain activity since May 11th, 2011 (date of its exit(release)) with the entrance(entry) of the tube which was opened (filled(blocked) by the workers during the wintry season with cotton fibers). The current temperature being situated near 18/20 °.
The first laying(eggs) of the year in place May 17th will follow the nymphose first one(night) on May 19th.
On May 30th, 2011, the brood of the young colony(summer camp) looks like this (cf. photo this bottom), present 7 nymphs. The colony(summer camp) is warmed approximately 2 hours a day. The food consists essentially of insects (flies fraichement killed in particular) as well as of a liquid mixture with milk / honey.
> > the colony(summer camp) was placed in nest. Advised(recommended) to this sort(species) from 2 ième year!
On June 13th, 2011 15 nymphs (cocoons) present in the colony(summer camp).
June 26th: first worker arisen from year 2011 is 38 days after the preparation(clothing business) of the first cocoon. The young young person can stay without showing anything statics for several hours before putting on(assuming) her first work within the colony(summer camp) == > children's nurse.
June 29thDeath(Dead man) of the first "small" worker, that is approximately 10 months after the appearance of the first workers of the queen in 2010.
On July 01st, 4 new workers appeared, it against part(party) the next day, July 02nd 4 first generation workers died leaving young - with young places in the future generation.
July 07th, 2011, with the death of two workers, totality of the first generation disappeared or a life expectancy(cycle) about 10 in 11 months. The workers of first year begin in disparaitre when the first workers of the second generation arrive eventually(later) of the nymphose or at their emergence.
At the moment the colony(summer camp) consists of 16 workers.
