Certain gestures(movements) and contractions meet systematically in the postures, the breath or the concentration:

  • Mula bandha mudrâ (the contraction of the anus)
  • Ashvini mudrâ (the contraction of the rectum)
  • Uddyana bandha mudrâ (the contraction of the stomach)
  • Jalahandhara bandha mudrâ (the contraction of the throat(breast))
  • Jhiva bandha mudrâ (the mudrâ of the language(tongue): kechari, khaki(persimmon))
  • Drishti mudrâ (the mudrâ of eyes: shambavi)

Then yes, all the time, it is necessary to set up these mudrâ and bandha in particular. Sometimes intensely sometimes more slightly.

To use them systematically allows to close the doors of the senses(directions) by which the energy returns and goes out as she wants, too freely, without control, quite there maitrisant her doors and make them hermetic. The energy will then be got, trapped, managed.

At the beginning, it is not evident to maintain them, " that lache ". Persevere and you will see that in time, these contractions will become natural. Furthermore, they will support you in techniques.

« Manage his(her, its) attention inside, while having the glance Turned(Shot) to the outside, without movement to open nor close eyes, it is the shâmbhavî mudrâ, hidden in Védas and Sâstras. When the yogin lives constantly with the spirit and the breath absorbed in the internal target antarlaksya ) although its glance in the immovable wards(pupils) is managed towards the outside or downward, as if it saw and nevertheless not seeing, this mudrâ really is shambhavî. When she(it) is reached(affected) by the grace(favor) of Guru, springs radiant this supreme Reality of Shambhu ( Shiva), which cannot be expriMée as having the characteristics of the space nor those of the non-space. »

( Hatha-yoga-Pradîpikâ IV 36, 37)

« The effects of shâmbhavî mudrâ: Védas, Purânas and other educations(teachings) are every fellow men to the luxury prostitutes. But this shâmbhavî mudrâ remains hidden as a young woman of noble family. The one who knows shâmbhavî mudrâ is similar to Lord Suprême Adinâtha; he is Nârâyana himself ( Vishnou), he is Brahmâ where from emanate the worlds. The big god Shiva ( Maheshvara) asserts ceaselessly: « really, I say it and repeat it, really the one who knows shâmbhavî becomes itself Brahman, the Absolute Reality. There is no doubt. »

( Gheranda Samhitâ III 64)

Shambhâvi Mudrâ, the gesture(movement) of the happiness

Shambhâva it is bliss, Shambhavi Mudrâ it is the gesture(movement) which gives the happiness, a state of unity(unit), the peace, the stability and the strength in itself.

Celà consists in fixing his(her) glance in a point, at height and between eyebrows, opened eyes or blindly.

This fixedness of the glance meets in many techniques of Hâtha Yoga. The stability of the glance is surprising of effects on the mental which then will get free of discursive thoughts and will bring a big concentration.

« By touching(brushing) your eyes as with a feather,

An opening towards the heart is frivolously made, and infiltrates into the cosmos »

( Sochanda Tantra - verse 13)

Hatha Yoga includes, in its techniques on the energy, what we call mudrâ and bandha.

Mudrâ wants to say "seal", "gesture"("movement")

Bandha wants to say "contraction"

This set(group) techniques of big interiority allows to close the doors of the senses(directions) by which the energy returns and goes out as she wants, too freely, without control.

The yogi, grace in mudrâ and bandha, is going to be able to master his doors and make them hermetic. The energy will then be got, trapped, managed.

Associated to displays(visualizations), to mantrâ, gestures(movements) and contractions make easier all the concentration necessary for the practice of all the techniques of Hatha Yoga. They are supports in the concentration besides the management of the energy and the stabilization of the mental.

What are doors?

Gestures(Movements) made with eyes are extremely powerful, certainly the most powerful of all.

We call these techniques: Drishti mudrâ

Ears connect(bind) us with sounds and vibration, in other words also importance of this door.

These doors are so associated with the oral or mental statement of sound formulae Bija mantrâ .

Gesture(Movement) of Bhramari

The language(tongue):

In the Yoga the vitality of the individual is directemment connected(bound) with the organ of the language(tongue).

3 main things(head teachers) mudrâ of the language(tongue):

Khechari mudrâThe turned(returned) language(tongue), the point(headland) on the soft veil of the palias at the bottom of the mouth

Jhiva bandhaThe language(tongue) resting(supporting) in the forefront(at the tip) of teeth or between teeth

Mudrâ khaki(persimmon)The language(tongue) in pipe

imagesHands :

Gestures(Movements) associated to hands - hasta mudrâ - create felt appear from the extrêment inside the powerful and the carrier of new sensations. Hands are in narrow relation with the body, the energy and the thought.

In the prânâyâmâ, the gestures(movements) of hands change the routes of the energies by having a real incidence on the mental. And certain gestures(movements) of hands look

The anus and the rectum:

It is the physical foundation of the corporéïté, it is the one by which one(which) we empty, and at the same time it is a part of the body extrêment inervé and directly connected(bound) with the whole central nervous sytème and with the spinal cord. And so in a unrefined way he(it) connects(binds) us with the earth(ground) and empties us there even of our subtle energies.

His(Her,Its) control is thus major, it is the real cork of the energy which in the difficult moments does not have to be relaché.

His(Her,Its) control will practice(be applied) mainly by the reappropriation of the internal muscles and the externs(the day pupils) of the sphincter, so as to register the most constant possible contraction of the anus upward. The fact of keeping(guarding) constantly a holding(dress) of the base upward, even light, in the practice but also in the daily life is going to allow a very powerful stimulation of the whole nervous and energy system.

At certain level of practice, this simple gesture(movement) is going to allow as time goes by to invert the course(price) of the energies which will go either downward and the dispersal, but on the contrary upward and the reinstatement.

The gesture(movement) of the anus is called MulabandhaThat of the rectum Ashvinimudrâ

The throat(breast): Jalandhara bandha mudrâ

The stomach: Uddyana bandha mudrâ

And finally, there is the autonomous mudrâ, looking like for some âsana (postures): maha bandha mudrâ, agni mudrâ, ganesha mudrâ, jyoti mudrâ, shiva prana mudrâ, viparita karani mudrâ etc. each trying to titillate and to awaken the energy in its way.

Viparita karani mudrâ

Maha mudrâ
